A lot of states will follow the federal mandate for motor carriers even if you are staying within state. However, some will have their own guideline and all will require proof of those requirements being met. Click for a list by state

Keep in mind, these limits are subject to change and you should always refer to your state’s law as this list may still need to be updated.

The amount of insurance you must have for a commercial vehicle will be decided by either state or federal law. These laws typically define insurance requirements based on a vehicle’s weight, carried commodities, and operation.

Here’s help with translating the commercial auto insurance requirements
CSL: Combined single limit. Some insurance liability minimums are listed as a single number, such as $500,000.
BI and PD: Bodily injury and property damage.
Three numbers: If you see three numbers, they define minimum liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage. For example, 50/100/10 means:
• $50,000 for bodily injury per person.
• $100,000 for bodily injury per accident.
• $10,000 for property damage
GVW or GVWR: Gross vehicle weight or gross vehicle weight rating (max carrying capacity plus weight of the vehicle.)

Passenger carrier limits of insurance differ greatly from property carriers. If you plan to operate as a passenger carry, please refer to your states specific requirements
